Guitar stabs, programmed percussion, bass, and flashes of synthesizer lock into a groove with the precision of dance music, but the performance never loses its rock-band physicality. Hutchence occupies the empty space between them, delivering one of his defining performances. The result sits somewhere between new wave, funk, rock, and late-night electronic pop, sounding both unmistakably 1987 and remarkably resistant to aging.

The pairing with “Mediate” makes this 12-inch especially significant.
