By 1983, The Lords Of The New Church had already proven they could turn punk’s wreckage into something darker and more theatrical. “Live For Today” showed they could make that sound dangerously catchy, too.

Released in 1983, “Live For Today” arrived between the Lords’ self-titled debut and their second album, Is Nothing Sacred?. The lineup remained a formidable meeting of punk veterans: Stiv Bators of the Dead Boys, Brian James of The Damned, Dave Tregunna of Sham 69, and Nicky Turner of The Barracudas. Together they had developed a sound that carried punk’s confrontational spirit into the emerging worlds of gothic rock, post-punk, and alternative music.

“Live For Today” is among the band’s more immediately melodic recordings. James’ guitar still has plenty of bite, but the song trades some of the debut album’s apocalyptic tension for a huge, anthemic chorus and a sense of reckless romanticism perfectly suited to Bators. His performance balances sneering punk attitude with the flamboyant, almost doomed charisma that made him such a magnetic frontman.

That tension was central to The Lords Of The New Church. They could sound threatening without becoming humorless and theatrical without losing the grime of their punk origins. On “Live For Today,” garage rock, glam, punk, new wave, and early gothic rock overlap naturally, illustrating why the band never fit neatly into any single scene.

This 1983 I.R.S. Records 12-inch expands the single with “Opening Nightmares” and “New Church,” the latter returning to one of the defining songs from the band’s debut. Together, the tracks make the record a compact snapshot of the Lords during their essential early period, with Bators and James transforming their first-wave punk pedigree into something more atmospheric and dramatic.

“Live For Today” remains a perfect distillation of what made The Lords Of The New Church distinctive: punk attitude dressed in gothic shadows, glam swagger, and enough melody to turn impending disaster into an anthem.

How we grade vinyl

All used vinyl are fully tested to ensure accuracy. We follow the Goldmine standard and grade conservatively.

Here’s how we rate:

  • Mint (M): Perfect, sealed, or unplayed.
  • Near Mint (NM): Looks and plays like new with minimal signs of handling.
  • Very Good+ (VG+): A few light cosmetic marks or faint surface noise.
  • Very Good (VG): Noticeable wear and some background noise, but no skips or major flaws.
  • Good (G): Heavier wear and noise, but still listenable.
  • Fair (F): Heavily worn or noisy—priced accordingly and sold as-is.
