New Order - Brotherhood

Brotherhood feels like a band standing between worlds, letting guitars and machines share the same space without forcing a choice.

Originally released in September 1986 on Factory Records, the album arrived at a moment when New Order had fully earned the freedom to follow instinct rather than expectation. Famously split between a more guitar-driven side and a more electronic one, Brotherhood plays less like a concept and more like a snapshot of a group comfortable with contradiction. It peaked at number nine on the UK Albums Chart and remains one of the clearest portraits of New Order’s range.

Songs move easily between bright synth patterns and jangling rock structures, often within the same emotional frame. “Bizarre Love Triangle” stands at the center, all nervous melody and romantic tension, but it works because of the surrounding material rather than in spite of it. Throughout the album, there is a sense of looseness and confidence, as if the band is no longer trying to prove anything.

This edition features 2024 remastered audio, previously available only as part of the Brotherhood Definitive Edition box set. The remaster brings added clarity and balance while preserving the album’s warmth and subtle imperfections.

Brotherhood is not about resolution. It is about coexistence, about letting different impulses live side by side. A record that sounds relaxed without being careless, and one that captures New Order at a point where division became a strength rather than a problem.
