Polaroid - Senza Respiro

Polaroid capture the moment Italian post-punk turns breathless, caught between cold control and melodic urgency.

Originally self-released as a six-track cassette EP in 1984, Senza Respiro was the debut statement from the Turin band, formed in 1981. Drawing influence from Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Cure, Pere Ubu, alongside unexpected touchstones like Chic and Talking Heads, Polaroid created a sound that was dark and minimal but still sharply melodic, especially in the guitars and vocals. The songs feel tense and forward-moving, shaped as much by rhythm as by mood.

During this early period, the lineup centered on Marcello Zavatto’s voice and guitar, supported by bass, drum machine, and sparse synth textures. By the end of 1984, the band expanded with a second vocalist and replaced live drums with a Roland TR-909, pushing their music into an even starker and more poetic direction influenced by acts like Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and The Sisters of Mercy. Polaroid would quietly disband in 1987, leaving behind a small but potent body of work.

This vinyl reissue of Senza Respiro includes all six original tracks along with four bonus songs from the band’s later period. All material has been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The record is housed in a custom jacket designed by Eloise Leigh and includes four Polaroid-sized postcards featuring photos, notes, and lyrics.

Senza Respiro stands as a document of a brief, intense moment. It captures a band in motion, channeling anxiety, style, and discipline into music that still feels immediate decades later.
