Genre(s):

  • Goth Rock

Punk had barely survived its first explosion when four veterans of the movement assembled a new church from the wreckage. Their 1982 debut turned punk’s raw materials into something darker, theatrical, and increasingly gothic.

The Lords Of The New Church brought together an extraordinary pedigree: Stiv Bators of the Dead Boys, Brian James of The Damned, Dave Tregunna of Sham 69, and Nicky Turner of The Barracudas. Rather than simply recreating their former bands, the quartet used that experience as a starting point for a sound incorporating punk, garage rock, glam, new wave, and the emerging gothic underground.

Released in 1982, their self-titled debut immediately established that identity. Opener “New Church” sounds like a manifesto, with James’ guitar cutting through a muscular rhythm section beneath Bators’ unmistakable sneer. “Russian Roulette” brings a colder, more ominous mood, while their cover of the Balloon Farm’s garage-psych classic “Question of Temperature” connects the band back to the unruly rock ’n’ roll that informed punk in the first place.

But “Open Your Eyes” became the album’s defining moment. Its urgent guitar line and warning against media manipulation distilled the Lords’ apocalyptic worldview into an unusually immediate anthem. The single reached the upper reaches of the UK independent chart and also crossed into American rock radio, giving the band one of its most enduring songs.

Across “Eat Your Heart Out,” “Livin’ on Livin’,” “Apocalypso,” and the closing “Holy War,” the record repeatedly crosses boundaries that were only beginning to solidify in 1982. The attack is unmistakably punk, but Bators’ dramatic delivery, James’ shadowy guitar work, and the band’s fixation on religion, politics, decadence, and impending catastrophe point directly toward the gothic rock that would flourish throughout the decade.

The result is one of those records that makes genre labels feel retrospective. The Lords Of The New Church is punk rock mutating in real time, retaining its danger while absorbing glam swagger, garage-rock grime, post-punk atmosphere, and gothic darkness.

How we grade vinyl

All used vinyl are fully tested to ensure accuracy. We follow the Goldmine standard and grade conservatively.

Here’s how we rate:

  • Mint (M): Perfect, sealed, or unplayed.
  • Near Mint (NM): Looks and plays like new with minimal signs of handling.
  • Very Good+ (VG+): A few light cosmetic marks or faint surface noise.
  • Very Good (VG): Noticeable wear and some background noise, but no skips or major flaws.
  • Good (G): Heavier wear and noise, but still listenable.
  • Fair (F): Heavily worn or noisy—priced accordingly and sold as-is.
