Nootropics feels like information overload rendered into sound—dense, anxious, and perpetually humming with low-grade tension.
Released in 2012, the album marked a sharp turn for Lower Dens, moving away from the dreamier indie textures of their debut toward something colder and more synthetic. Drawing heavily from post-punk, minimal wave, and early industrial electronics, Nootropics frames modern life as a system—impersonal, overstimulated, and quietly oppressive.
Sequenced synths churn with mechanical insistence, basslines loop with nervous precision, and rhythms pulse without offering release. Vocals are distant and restrained, often delivered as if filtered through layers of interference, reinforcing the album’s themes of surveillance, control, and emotional detachment.
Nootropics doesn’t invite comfort or escape. It lingers in unease, capturing the feeling of being constantly plugged in and slowly worn down—music for late nights, glowing screens, and the uneasy quiet that follows too much input.

How we grade vinyl
All used vinyl are fully tested to ensure accuracy. We follow the Goldmine standard and grade conservatively.
Here’s how we rate:
- Mint (M): Perfect, sealed, or unplayed.
- Near Mint (NM): Looks and plays like new with minimal signs of handling.
- Very Good+ (VG+): A few light cosmetic marks or faint surface noise.
- Very Good (VG): Noticeable wear and some background noise, but no skips or major flaws.
- Good (G): Heavier wear and noise, but still listenable.
- Fair (F): Heavily worn or noisy—priced accordingly and sold as-is.
