New Order - Movement

Movement sounds like a band learning how to exist again, moving carefully through loss rather than trying to escape it.

Originally released in 1981, the album was written and recorded in the immediate aftermath of Ian Curtis’s death, with all eight tracks composed during a short, intense period in the summer of 1980. Produced by Martin Hannett, whose presence still looms large, the record carries much of Joy Division’s shadow while quietly resisting the idea of continuation. It is tentative, restrained, and emotionally heavy without ever becoming dramatic.

The songs move slowly and deliberately. Basslines remain prominent and melodic, drums feel distant and ceremonial, and synthesizers hover rather than lead. Vocals are subdued and inward-facing, often sounding unsure of their place, which only deepens the album’s sense of vulnerability. Tracks like “Dreams Never End” and “Truth” feel unresolved by design, as if the band is testing the ground with each step forward.

This edition features 2019 remastered audio, previously available only through the Movement Definitive Edition box set. The remaster brings subtle clarity without disturbing the album’s fragile atmosphere.

Movement reached number one on the UK independent albums chart in 1981, but its importance has little to do with charts. It documents a moment of transition that feels painfully honest, capturing New Order not as a new beginning yet, but as something still forming in real time.
