Strangeways, Here We Come feels like a farewell that never quite says goodbye, even though the band was already unraveling.

Released in 1987 as The Smiths’ final studio album, the record arrived amid internal fracture, yet it sounds expansive and strangely liberated. Rather than retreating into minimal jangle, the band broadened their palette, introducing fuller arrangements and more dynamic shifts while retaining their lyrical sharpness.

Guitars remain melodic but less brittle, rhythms feel more elastic, and the production allows space for variation rather than uniform austerity. Morrissey’s vocals move between biting wit and weary introspection, while the songwriting stretches beyond the band’s earlier templates. There is a looseness here that feels deliberate, even as tensions behind the scenes were peaking.

Strangeways stands as both conclusion and evolution. It captures The Smiths reaching toward something larger just as the structure holding them together gave way, making it one of their most compelling and bittersweet statements.
