Creux Lies - Goodbye Divine

Creux Lies have always understood that the best darkwave can be both devastating and euphoric. Goodbye Divine lives in that tension, wrapping emotional weight in soaring guitars, luminous synths, and rhythms built to move.

Released in 2021 on Freakwave, Goodbye Divine is the second full-length from the Sacramento band, following their 2018 debut The Hearth. Where that record established Creux Lies within the modern post-punk and darkwave revival, Goodbye Divine broadens the palette, leaning further into the expansive, romantic side of gothic rock, new wave, and synth-driven post-punk.

From the opening pulse of “Jungle” onward, the album favors atmosphere without sacrificing momentum. “Misunderstanding” surrounds its driving rhythm with shimmering guitar and synth, while “I Wish I Was You” builds toward the kind of enormous, emotionally charged chorus that has become one of Creux Lies’ signatures. “Renegade” and “Becoming” similarly balance melancholy with movement, allowing darkness and melody to coexist rather than compete.

At the center is Ean Clevenger’s commanding vocal performance, capable of shifting from intimate restraint to dramatic release as the arrangements swell around him. The Cure and mid-period Clan of Xymox are obvious reference points, but Creux Lies avoid simple revivalism. Their sound takes the scale and romanticism of classic ’80s alternative music and filters it through the cleaner production and rhythmic weight of contemporary darkwave.

That combination gives Goodbye Divine an unusual sense of scale. Synths stretch across the horizon, guitars shimmer and surge, and the rhythm section keeps even the album’s most introspective moments moving forward. Beneath it all are songs concerned with loss, identity, longing, and transformation, giving the record an emotional center equal to its atmosphere.

Goodbye Divine is Creux Lies operating confidently within the lineage of dark alternative music while carving out their own space inside it: romantic, cinematic, deeply melancholic, and filled with melodies that linger long after the final note fades.
