  • Goth Rock

Few bands could make apocalyptic mysticism feel as physical as Fields Of The Nephilim. Sumerland takes one of the defining tracks from Elizium and stretches its ritualistic atmosphere into something even more immersive.

Released in 1990 on Beggars Banquet, the Sumerland EP arrived during the Elizium era, when Fields Of The Nephilim had pushed their gothic rock foundations into increasingly expansive and psychedelic territory. Carl McCoy’s cavernous vocals remain unmistakable, but the music surrounding him had become larger and more hypnotic, built from layers of guitar, tribal rhythm, and atmosphere rather than conventional rock structures.

“Sumerland” is one of the clearest examples of that evolution. Named for the spiritualist concept of an afterlife or higher plane of existence, the song unfolds gradually, with Paul Wright and Peter Yates’ guitars creating vast sheets of sound over Tony Pettitt’s bass and Alexander “Nod” Wright’s commanding percussion. McCoy sounds less like a traditional frontman than the leader of some desert ritual, giving the track the occult grandeur that became inseparable from the Nephilim’s identity.

This UK 12-inch EP centers on the extended “Sumerland (Dreamed Version),” allowing the track’s psychedelic textures and slow-building dynamics even greater space to develop. It is backed by “Submission Two (The Dub Posture),” a radically atmospheric reworking that emphasizes rhythm, space, and studio manipulation, revealing the experimental streak running beneath the band’s gothic exterior.

The result is more than a companion piece to Elizium. Heard in this extended format, “Sumerland” demonstrates just how far Fields Of The Nephilim had traveled from the comparatively direct gothic rock of their earliest recordings. By 1990, their music had become something more cinematic and immersive, drawing from psychedelia, dub, progressive rock, ritualistic percussion, and gothic atmosphere without fitting comfortably into any one of them.

For devotees of the classic Nephilim lineup, Sumerland is an essential artifact from the band at its creative peak: mystical, hypnotic, monumental, and unmistakably otherworldly.

  • Very Good+ (VG+): A few light cosmetic marks or faint surface noise.
  • Very Good (VG): Noticeable wear and some background noise, but no skips or major flaws.
  • Good (G): Heavier wear and noise, but still listenable.
