INXS - Need You Tonight / Mediate

A clipped guitar riff, a skeletal beat, and Michael Hutchence barely raising his voice above a seductive whisper. “Need You Tonight” proved that INXS could create something enormous by stripping almost everything away.

Released in 1987 as the lead single from Kick, “Need You Tonight” marked the moment INXS moved from successful Australian exports to one of the biggest bands in the world. Written by Andrew Farriss and Michael Hutchence, the song emerged from a remarkably simple foundation: Farriss devised the instantly recognizable guitar riff and rhythm track, while Hutchence supplied a vocal performance that turns restraint into pure tension.

Producer Chris Thomas wisely leaves space around every element. Guitar stabs, programmed percussion, bass, and flashes of synthesizer lock into a groove with the precision of dance music, but the performance never loses its rock-band physicality. Hutchence occupies the empty space between them, delivering one of his defining performances. The result sits somewhere between new wave, funk, rock, and late-night electronic pop, sounding both unmistakably 1987 and remarkably resistant to aging.

The pairing with “Mediate” makes this 12-inch especially significant. On Kick, “Need You Tonight” flows directly into “Mediate,” a sparse, hypnotic piece built around Andrew Farriss’ keyboard figure and Hutchence’s stream of rhyming words. Its famous video, with the band holding cue cards, deliberately nods to Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” while the song itself provides an eccentric counterpoint to the tightly controlled sensuality of its companion.

“Need You Tonight” became INXS’s only No. 1 single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, while Kick went on to establish the group as international stars. Yet beneath that commercial success is a remarkably unconventional recording, one whose power comes as much from what INXS leaves out as what they put in.

This 1987 12-inch single pairs two songs designed to be heard together, preserving one of Kick’s most memorable sequences outside the album itself. Minimal, funky, seductive, and effortlessly cool, “Need You Tonight” remains INXS at their most economical and irresistible.
