Manchester in 1990 was producing music that made the old division between rock band and dancefloor increasingly meaningless. Pills ’N’ Thrills And Bellyaches was its gloriously unruly masterpiece.

Originally released in 1990, Happy Mondays’ third album brought together indie rock, acid house, funk, psychedelia, and club culture at precisely the moment the Madchester movement was reaching critical mass. Produced by Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne, the record turned the Mondays’ loose, chaotic energy into something remarkably cohesive without sanding away any of their eccentricity.

The rhythm section is everything. Funky basslines, shuffling percussion, and dance-derived grooves give the album a swagger unlike virtually anything else coming out of British guitar music at the time. Above it all, Shaun Ryder delivers his surreal, streetwise lyrics with an unmistakable Mancunian drawl, while Mark "Bez" Berry's presence became inseparable from the band's collision of indie culture and the rave generation.

“Step On” and “Kinky Afro” became era-defining singles, but the deeper cuts make Pills ’N’ Thrills And Bellyaches more than a period-piece collection of Madchester hits. “Loose Fit,” “God’s Cop,” and “Dennis and Lois” reinforce just how naturally the band could move between rock, funk, and the rhythms pouring out of Britain’s clubs.

This 2026 reissue has been newly remastered from the original Factory Records master tapes, returning to the source for one of the defining albums of the era.

More than three decades later, Pills ’N’ Thrills And Bellyaches still sounds wonderfully uncontained: euphoric, strange, funky, and unmistakably Manchester. It didn’t simply document the moment when indie and rave collided. It helped make that collision permanent.
