Ministry - All Day / Everyday (Is Halloween)

Before Ministry became synonymous with grinding guitars and industrial metal, “All Day” and “Everyday (Is Halloween)” caught Al Jourgensen at the precise moment synth-pop was mutating into something colder, harder, and unmistakably Wax Trax!.

Recorded after Ministry’s departure from Arista and the polished synth-pop of With Sympathy, “All Day” marked a crucial step toward the electronic aggression that would soon define the band. Sequenced rhythms, rigid bass, synthesizers, and Jourgensen’s increasingly severe vocal delivery push the track toward the emerging territory between EBM, industrial dance, new wave, and synth-pop. A remixed version would later surface on 1986’s Twitch, by which point Ministry’s transformation was impossible to miss.

On the reverse is the song that became an anthem.

“Everyday (Is Halloween)” pairs a remarkably infectious synth line with lyrics about alienation, appearance, and being treated as an outsider. Its central idea resonated far beyond Ministry’s original audience, particularly within goth and industrial club culture, where the song became one of the enduring dance-floor standards of the era. Despite its association with Ministry, it never appeared on one of the band’s contemporary studio albums, later becoming a cornerstone of the Twelve Inch Singles (1981–1984) collection.

What makes the pairing so fascinating today is hearing Ministry in transition. The melodic instincts of their earliest recordings remain, but the machinery is becoming more prominent. “All Day” points forward toward Twitch and the increasingly abrasive records that followed, while “Everyday (Is Halloween)” occupies its own strange space: gloomy enough for the goth club, mechanical enough for the industrial crowd, and catchy enough to transcend both.

This 1985 U.S. Wax Trax! 12-inch pressing comes housed in the blue sleeve, pairing “All Day” with the extended version of “Everyday (Is Halloween).”

It’s more than an essential Ministry single. WAX 007 documents one of industrial music’s pivotal transformations in real time, with Jourgensen leaving synth-pop behind and discovering the darker electronic language that would reshape Ministry entirely.
