Godflesh returns to it's stark industrial-metal foundations with mechanized rhythms, oppressive guitar weight, and an atmosphere of urban desolation.
Decay is Godflesh's tenth studio album and the penultimate chapter in a career that began in Birmingham in 1988. Following 2023's Purge, Broadrick and Green revisit the brutal minimalism that has defined their work since Streetcleaner, stripping heavy music down to its most elemental components: distorted guitar, subterranean bass, programmed percussion, and a voice that sounds perpetually at war with its surroundings.
The album's six tracks originated during the sessions for Purge, but took shape over several years as Broadrick continued refining the material. The result is unmistakably Godflesh, yet there's a particularly stark sense of finality running through it.
"Master and Slave" opens with nearly nine minutes of grinding, mechanized tension, establishing an atmosphere of exhaustion and confrontation. "Living/Ending" and "Feral Colony" move through the band's trademark collision of industrial repetition and crushing guitar, while "Fear of Man" and "Fodder" maintain the record's relentless physical weight.
Everything culminates in "Consume Me," an eleven-minute closing piece that drags the album toward its bleak conclusion. Broadrick has described the opening and closing tracks as the record's conceptual anchors, together accounting for nearly half its running time. Their extended structures give Decay a sense of deliberate, almost ritualistic exhaustion.
The circumstances surrounding the album lend that title additional weight. Following serious abdominal surgery, Broadrick announced that the physical demands of performing Godflesh's music had become unsustainable. While the recordings were completed before his operation, the album was mixed during his recovery, adding another dimension to music that has always served as an outlet for psychological and physical distress.
Produced by Justin K. Broadrick at Avalanche Studio, Decay preserves the stark interplay between his guitars, electronics, and vocals and G.C. Green's immense bass sound. There is little ornamentation or relief, just the slow accumulation of pressure that Godflesh have spent decades perfecting.
Decay is not quite the end, but it sounds acutely aware that an ending is approaching. A crushing reminder of why Godflesh remain foundational to industrial metal, and why their particular combination of machinery, repetition, and human anguish has never been convincingly replicated.
