“World Of Light” catches Balaam And The Angel at the beginning, already balancing gothic atmosphere with the melodic lift that would distinguish them from many of their peers.
Released in November 1984 on Chapter 22, this four-track 12-inch pairs the title song with “For More Than A Day,” “The Darklands,” and “A New Dawn.” Recorded at Woodbine Street Studios, the release offers a compact snapshot of the band’s early sound before their later albums broadened the frame.
Driving basslines and chiming guitars give the songs momentum, while the vocals bring a romantic, earnest quality to the darker post-punk foundation. The production is lean and immediate, preserving the energy of a young band already developing a strong melodic identity.
World Of Light works as an early statement of intent. It shows Balaam And The Angel emerging from the UK gothic underground with enough atmosphere for the scene, but enough clarity and hook-driven songwriting to point toward the more expansive direction ahead.
