Black Marble ‎- Life in Small Spaces

Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition
EditionBlack Vinyl

Genre(s):

  • Synth-pop
  • Post-Punk

Black Marble has spent more than a decade finding warmth inside cold machines. On Life in Small Spaces, Chris Stewart opens the windows a little wider, letting guitars, sharper songwriting, and a renewed sense of immediacy into his beautifully faded synth-pop.

Released in August 2026 on Sacred Bones Records, Life in Small Spaces is the latest full-length from Stewart’s long-running Black Marble project. The familiar ingredients remain: vintage synthesizers, drum machines, submerged vocals, and melodies that seem to arrive through a haze of memory. But the album subtly alters the formula, bringing chiming guitar and more organic rhythmic textures forward without abandoning the melancholic electronic atmosphere that has defined Black Marble since 2012.

That evolution is immediately apparent on “It Always Comes to Me,” while “Jim Carol New Year” and “Anything” balance bright melodic surfaces against Stewart’s characteristically introspective writing. Across eleven tracks, songs like “Other Man’s Dream,” “Life Without,” “Missing History,” and “Panopticon Calls” move between coldwave, synth-pop, post-punk, and understated indie pop, retaining Black Marble’s sense of distance while allowing more light into the arrangements.

The title reflects the album’s larger preoccupation with creative freedom, simplicity, and the pressures placed on artists to measure their lives through conventional ideas of success. Stewart approaches limitation not as deprivation but as a conscious choice, questioning what stability and comfort are worth if achieving them requires sacrificing the relationships, communities, and creative work that give life meaning.

It makes Life in Small Spaces feel particularly personal without losing the ambiguity that has always made Black Marble compelling. Stewart still favors suggestion over declaration, burying introspection inside radiant melodies and slightly worn electronic textures. The difference is one of perspective. Where earlier Black Marble records could feel like transmissions from an unreachable past, this one sounds firmly rooted in where its creator is now.

Life in Small Spaces is another quietly absorbing entry in the Black Marble catalog: melancholic but never defeated, nostalgic without standing still, and proof that even small changes can dramatically alter the light inside a familiar room.
