Long before darkwave became a genre unto itself, The Rope was already reaching beyond the boundaries of traditional goth.

Originally released in 1986, Black Tape For A Blue Girl’s debut introduced the deeply personal songwriting of Projekt Records founder Sam Rosenthal alongside the impassioned vocals of Oscar Herrera. Sparse electronics, ambient passages, and introspective lyrics give the album an intimacy far removed from the more guitar-driven gothic rock of the period. Instead, The Rope inhabits a fragile space of isolation, heartbreak, longing, and the search for human connection.

Rosenthal was only twenty when he created the album, and that youthful emotional intensity permeates the recording. Warm electronic textures surround Herrera’s dramatic vocals, moving between bare-boned darkwave and soothing ambient passages with echoes of the atmospheric experimentation associated with labels like 4AD and Factory Records. Even in its comparatively lo-fi beginnings, the distinctive language Black Tape For A Blue Girl would spend decades expanding was already taking shape.

Its reputation has endured well beyond the underground scene that first embraced it. In 2025, Uncut included The Rope at #169 in its 200 Greatest Goth Albums, highlighting its unusual fusion of ambient darkwave, neoclassical elements, and dark cabaret.

This 40th Anniversary Edition gives the album an especially substantial retrospective treatment. Limited to 300 copies on color vinyl, the 2LP set pairs a remaster of the original mix on LP1 with an entirely new 2026 mix by Sam Rosenthal on LP2, offering two perspectives on the recording four decades apart.

Forty years later, The Rope remains striking precisely because it never fit neatly into goth’s established conventions. Intimate, atmospheric, and emotionally exposed, it marked the beginning of both Black Tape For A Blue Girl and the enduring Projekt Records aesthetic that followed.
