There’s a stark, restless energy running through Personal Decay that feels tailor-made for the coldest corners of the post-punk underground.
Released in 2022, the album finds Russian trio Blind Seagull working within the intersection of coldwave, post-punk, and minimal wave. The sound is stripped down and deliberately austere, favoring repetition, tension, and atmosphere over elaborate arrangements.
Rigid drum-machine rhythms and prominent basslines form the backbone of the record, while icy guitar lines cut through the mix in short, wiry bursts. Synths add another layer of unease without overwhelming the skeletal arrangements, and the detached vocal delivery reinforces the sense of isolation running throughout the album.
There’s a strong connection to the darker European post-punk tradition here, but Personal Decay never feels like simple revivalism. Blind Seagull use those familiar ingredients to create something immediate and distinctly their own, with enough rhythmic momentum beneath the gloom to keep the record moving.
Personal Decay is lean, hypnotic, and beautifully bleak, an excellent entry point into Blind Seagull’s brand of modern coldwave and a natural fit for listeners drawn to the more minimal, bass-driven side of contemporary post-punk.
