By the end of the 1980s, Cabaret Voltaire had traveled a long way from the abrasive tape experiments of their Sheffield beginnings. “Hypnotised” captures them fully immersed in the dancefloor, without completely abandoning the unease beneath the beat.

Released in 1989 on Parlophone, “Hypnotised” arrived during Cabaret Voltaire’s increasingly club-oriented period and would later appear on 1990’s Groovy, Laidback and Nasty. Richard H. Kirk and Stephen Mallinder were absorbing the rapidly changing language of acid house, Chicago house, electro, and contemporary electronic dance music, connecting their industrial roots to the club culture exploding around them.

The original track already demonstrates that transformation, but this UK 12-inch single makes the dancefloor connection even clearer. It contains four distinct versions: The Fon Force Mix, The Fon Force Dub, the D.M.D.O.R. Mix, and the Robert Gordon Mix. Rather than treating remixing as an afterthought, each version dismantles and reconstructs the track through different combinations of rhythm, vocals, bass, and electronics.

The personnel behind those mixes also places the record squarely within an important moment in British electronic music. Mark Brydon and Robert Gordon, soon associated with Sheffield’s influential Warp scene, were part of the production team, while the D.M.D.O.R. version brings Daniel Miller of Mute Records into the equation. The broader “Hypnotised” remix campaign would even include separate versions by Manchester acid-house pioneer A Guy Called Gerald.

What makes “Hypnotised” particularly interesting within Cabaret Voltaire’s catalog is that the transition never feels entirely clean. The groove may be smoother and the production increasingly sophisticated, but something characteristically strange remains underneath. Repetition becomes hypnotic in both senses of the word: seductive enough for the club, yet just unsettling enough to remind you who made it.

Hypnotised documents Cabaret Voltaire at a fascinating crossroads, bridging industrial experimentation with house, electro, and the emerging sound of late-’80s British club culture.

How we grade vinyl

All used vinyl are fully tested to ensure accuracy. We follow the Goldmine standard and grade conservatively.

Here’s how we rate:

  • Mint (M): Perfect, sealed, or unplayed.
  • Near Mint (NM): Looks and plays like new with minimal signs of handling.
  • Very Good+ (VG+): A few light cosmetic marks or faint surface noise.
  • Very Good (VG): Noticeable wear and some background noise, but no skips or major flaws.
  • Good (G): Heavier wear and noise, but still listenable.
  • Fair (F): Heavily worn or noisy—priced accordingly and sold as-is.
