Camouflage - The Great Commandment

With its ominous synth hook, propulsive rhythm, and instantly memorable chorus, “The Great Commandment” introduced Camouflage to an international audience and gave late-’80s synth-pop one of its enduring club anthems.

The German trio of Marcus Meyn, Heiko Maile, and Oliver Kreyssig originally developed the song under the title “Suddenly Went Away” before reworking it into “The Great Commandment.” First released in Europe in 1987, it preceded their debut album, Voices & Images, and quickly established Camouflage far beyond their home country.

The Depeche Mode comparisons were inevitable. Camouflage shared their taste for brooding synthesizers, sequenced rhythms, and melancholy melodies, but “The Great Commandment” demonstrated the trio’s own ability to balance darker electronic textures with an enormous pop chorus. Meyn’s restrained vocal provides the human counterpoint to the precise programming, while the lyrics take aim at blind obedience and the ease with which conviction can become manipulation.

That combination translated particularly well to clubs. “The Great Commandment” became Camouflage’s breakthrough in the United States, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s dance chart and becoming the song most closely associated with the group. Decades later, its combination of melancholy, melody, and electronic precision remains instantly recognizable.

This original 1988 U.S. 12-inch pressing on Atlantic Records captures the single during its initial American breakthrough rather than as a later retrospective reissue. The extended format gives the track’s sequencing, rhythms, and instrumental passages more room to breathe, highlighting exactly why “The Great Commandment” became such a natural fit for alternative dancefloors.

More than three decades later, it remains quintessential Camouflage: melodic, melancholic, meticulously electronic, and inseparable from the golden era of European synth-pop.
