Cor De Lux - Year Of The Horse

There’s a nervous energy running through Year Of The Horse, the sound of a band that knows exactly how much tension a song can hold before it snaps.

Released in 2026, Year Of The Horse is the latest album from Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina quartet Cor de Lux and their first for Ipecac Recordings. The record builds on the sound the band developed across Dream Life and Media, pushing their collision of post-punk, post-hardcore, shoegaze, noise rock, and art rock into something heavier and more immediate.

Cor de Lux thrive on contrasts. Guitars can shift from atmospheric shimmer to serrated noise without warning, while bass and drums give the songs a physical, restless momentum. Dawn Moraga and Tim Lusk’s guitars and vocals sit at the center of that push and pull, joined by bassist John Bliven and drummers Jacob Richardson and Thomas Swinn-McNeely across the sessions. There are traces of Fugazi’s rhythmic tension and Blonde Redhead’s more angular instincts, but the band’s mixture of melody, abrasion, and shoegaze atmosphere has developed into a character of its own.

Tracks like “The Cringe,” “The Deli,” and “Blind Smile” demonstrate how naturally Cor de Lux move between those extremes. The melodies remain accessible even as the arrangements become increasingly unpredictable, with synth textures and quieter passages providing space before the guitars surge forward again. Rather than polishing away the rough edges, the album preserves the sense of four musicians reacting to one another in real time.

That immediacy owes plenty to J. Robbins, who recorded and mixed much of the album at Magpie Cage Recording Studio. His production captures the force of Cor de Lux’s live sound without flattening its dynamics, allowing the quieter details to coexist with the record’s louder, more abrasive passages.

Year Of The Horse is Cor de Lux at their most confident: melodic without becoming comfortable, atmospheric without losing its teeth, and noisy without sacrificing the songs underneath. It’s a compelling next chapter for one of North Carolina’s most distinctive guitar bands.
