The opening riff of “Twist of Cain” makes the mission clear: Danzig had left punk behind, but none of its menace.
Originally released in 1988, Glenn Danzig’s first album under the Danzig name brought together the dark theatricality of the Misfits, the heavier attack of Samhain, blues-soaked hard rock, and an unmistakable fascination with the occult. Produced by Rick Rubin and released through his Def American label, Danzig stripped heavy music down to its essentials: enormous riffs, muscular rhythms, and Danzig’s commanding baritone pushed directly to the front.
The lineup was formidable. John Christ’s guitar work moves between bluesy swagger and crushing metallic weight, Eerie Von provides the low-end foundation, and Chuck Biscuits brings a hard-hitting punk economy to the drums. Against them, Glenn Danzig sounds less like a conventional metal singer than a demonic blues crooner, owing as much to Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison as to hardcore punk.
“Twist of Cain,” “Not of This World,” “She Rides,” and “Am I Demon” established the album’s dark, stripped-down vocabulary, but “Mother” became its defining song. Although it took years to become a mainstream hit, its massive riff and defiant chorus eventually turned it into one of the most recognizable hard-rock songs of the era.
What makes Danzig endure is how little it belongs to any single scene. Too bluesy and sensual for thrash, too heavy for goth rock, and far removed from the hardcore roots of its members, it created a space entirely its own.
Danzig remains a formidable debut: sinister, swaggering, remarkably lean, and foundational to everything Glenn Danzig would do next.
