Def Leppard ‎- Hysteria

Few albums embody the sheer scale and ambition of late-’80s rock quite like Hysteria. Def Leppard set out to make a record where every song could be a single, and came remarkably close to pulling it off.

Originally released in 1987, the band’s fourth album reunited them with producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange and pushed the meticulous production of Pyromania into entirely new territory. Years in the making, Hysteria layers enormous guitars, stacked vocal harmonies, electronic textures, and precisely constructed rhythms into a sound that is unmistakably hard rock yet polished with the obsessive detail of a pop record.

The circumstances surrounding its creation make the achievement even more remarkable. Following drummer Rick Allen’s 1984 car accident and the loss of his left arm, Allen developed a customized electronic-acoustic drum setup that allowed him to continue performing with the band. His distinctive combination of electronic percussion and acoustic cymbals became integral to the album’s futuristic rhythmic character.

The songs are almost absurdly deep in hooks. “Animal,” “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Armageddon It,” “Rocket,” the title track, and the chart-topping “Love Bites” helped turn Hysteria into a global phenomenon, while deeper cuts reveal just how carefully every corner of the album was constructed. Hard-rock riffs coexist with synths, samples, processed guitars, and immense multitracked choruses without losing the band's melodic identity.

More than a blockbuster of its era, Hysteria remains a landmark in studio production. Its combination of hard rock power and pop precision influenced countless records that followed, while its biggest songs remain virtually inseparable from the sound of the late 1980s.
