Diiv - Zirp!

After years spent exploring the hazier and heavier ends of shoegaze, DIIV are making a sharp turn toward something they describe with unusual directness: POP. ZIRP! is the band embracing immediacy, accessibility, and fun without abandoning the warped guitar music that made them DIIV in the first place.

Released in 2026 through Fantasy Records, ZIRP! follows 2024’s Frog in Boiling Water and represents another significant shift for a band that has rarely been content to make the same record twice. This time, DIIV enlisted A.G. Cook, the producer and songwriter best known for founding PC Music and for his work with Charli xcx, to help reshape their sound.

On paper, the pairing is unexpected. DIIV emerged from Brooklyn’s early-2010s indie underground with dreamy, effects-heavy guitars and gradually evolved toward the dense shoegaze and alternative rock of Deceiver and Frog in Boiling Water. Cook comes from an electronic-pop world built around synthetic textures, exaggerated hooks, and a willingness to dismantle conventional ideas of what pop music should sound like.

ZIRP! brings those instincts together.

DIIV themselves call it their “POP record” and an “extremely accessible mainstream alternative rock record,” but there's a knowing wink behind the declaration. Rather than sanding away the band's personality in pursuit of accessibility, the album asks what a DIIV version of mainstream alternative music might actually sound like.

That means placing greater emphasis on hooks and immediacy while retaining the guitars, textures, and sonic details that have always defined the group. Cook's production provides a different framework for those elements, allowing DIIV to explore brighter and more playful territory after the weight and anxiety surrounding much of their recent work.

Even the title reflects that change in perspective. ZIRP, or Zero Interest Rate Policy, is a piece of economic jargon transformed here into something punchy, absurd, and deliberately easy to remember. DIIV sum up the philosophy behind the album even more succinctly: “Life is hard. ZIRP! is easy.”

This 2026 Fantasy Records edition is pressed on classic black vinyl.

After the darkness of their recent records, ZIRP! sounds like DIIV giving themselves permission to have some fun. It’s an intriguing collision of shoegaze and alternative rock with A.G. Cook’s adventurous pop instincts, from a band once again refusing to stay exactly where you left them.
