Front Line Assembly - Mechviruses

Rather than simply remixing the past, Mechviruses infects Front Line Assembly’s machinery with a new generation of dark electronic artists, mutating familiar material into something considerably stranger.

Released in 2025 on Artoffact Records, Mechviruses revisits material from Front Line Assembly’s 2018 instrumental soundtrack WarMech. Instead of a conventional remix collection, the project hands those compositions to artists from across the contemporary EBM, darkwave, industrial, synthpop, and post-punk underground, adding new vocals, instrumentation, and production to FLA’s dystopian electronic foundations.

The collaborators make the concept especially compelling. ULTRA SUNN and Ayria with Sebastian Komor offer dramatically different transformations of “Mechvirus,” while Brooklyn post-punks Bootblacks take on “Force Carrier.” “Molotov” appears in three distinct incarnations featuring Seeming, Encephalon, and s with Famine and Lys Morke, while MVTANT and Cardinal Noire each reconstruct “Heatmap.” Fotocrime brings its own shadowy character to “(RE)CREATOR,” and Deep Infirmary reshapes “Anthropod.”

What emerges is less a remix album than a conversation between generations. Front Line Assembly’s precision-engineered electronics remain the connective tissue, but each collaborator pulls them somewhere different. One track may lean toward muscular EBM, another toward darkwave or synthpop, while others plunge deeper into abrasive industrial electronics. The source material’s cinematic quality makes it unusually adaptable, allowing voices and melodies to inhabit spaces that were originally entirely instrumental.

For a band whose history stretches back to the earliest days of electro-industrial, that approach feels particularly appropriate. Mechviruses doesn’t ask Front Line Assembly to imitate contemporary dark music. Instead, it demonstrates just how much of that music already carries FLA’s DNA.

This first vinyl pressing comes on pink vinyl and is exclusive to Artoffact Records, collecting all ten collaborations on a single LP.

Mechviruses is both a reimagining of WarMech and a snapshot of the modern industrial underground: Front Line Assembly’s machinery opened up, rewired, and handed to a new generation to see what mutations emerge.
