Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada E.P.

Two compositions, nearly half an hour, and not a second wasted. Slow Riot For New Zerø Kanada E.P. is Godspeed You! Black Emperor reducing their apocalyptic vision to its most concentrated form.

Originally released in 1999 on Constellation Records, Slow Riot For New Zerø Kanada E.P. followed the Montreal collective’s debut, F♯ A♯ ∞, and preceded the monumental Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. With only “Moya” and “BBF3,” the EP occupies a crucial place between those records, sharpening the slow-building dynamics and orchestral scale that would become central to Godspeed’s sound.

“Moya” begins almost imperceptibly before strings and guitars gradually assemble around a mournful central theme. What starts as restraint becomes enormous, with violin, percussion, bass, and multiple guitars accumulating until the composition reaches one of the group’s most cathartic early crescendos. It’s a defining example of the quiet-to-overwhelming dynamics that would become synonymous with post-rock, even as Godspeed themselves have always existed somewhat uneasily within that label.

“BBF3” is darker and more confrontational. The track is built around field recordings of an unidentified man, later nicknamed Blaise Bailey Finnegan III, delivering a furious monologue about government, society, and personal resistance. His voice repeatedly disappears into stretches of brooding instrumentation before the ensemble erupts around it, turning the piece into something between documentary, political collage, and orchestral rock.

Even the physical presentation reflects the record’s atmosphere. The sleeve is dominated by Hebrew text taken from Jeremiah 4:23–27, reinforcing the sense of desolation and impending collapse that hangs over the music. Constellation’s typically understated packaging makes the EP feel more like an artifact than a conventional rock release.

This 2021 Constellation pressing preserves the original two-track program on 180-gram vinyl. More than two decades after its first appearance, Slow Riot For New Zerø Kanada remains one of Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s most essential recordings: cinematic, ominous, politically charged, and capable of turning patience itself into overwhelming emotional force.
