IDLES – Joy As An Act Of Resistance

Anger might have introduced the world to IDLES, but joy became their most radical weapon. On Joy as an Act of Resistance., the Bristol band turned the fury of their debut into something bigger: a ferocious, deeply human record about grief, masculinity, vulnerability, and the stubborn determination to find hope in a hostile world.

Released in 2018 through Partisan Records, Joy as an Act of Resistance. was IDLES' second studio album, arriving just a year after Brutalism established them as one of Britain's most exciting new punk bands. Frontman Joe Talbot and his bandmates retained the abrasive guitars, pounding rhythms, and confrontational energy of their debut, but the songwriting had grown more focused, emotionally direct, and unexpectedly uplifting.

The album opens with “Colossus,” a slow-building explosion of tension that eventually collapses into a frantic punk assault. It's an audacious introduction, immediately followed by “Never Fight a Man with a Perm,” a savage and darkly funny dismantling of toxic masculinity delivered over one of the band's most infectious riffs.

“Danny Nedelko” became an anthem of solidarity and immigration, transforming a deeply political message into a joyous, communal shout-along. “I'm Scum” similarly reclaims the language of class contempt, while “Television” challenges destructive beauty standards with the kind of blunt sincerity that became central to IDLES' appeal.

But the record's most affecting moments come when the aggression gives way to vulnerability. “June” addresses the death of Talbot's infant daughter with devastating restraint, its repeated phrases expressing grief that ordinary language can barely contain. “Samaritans” confronts the emotional damage caused by traditional expectations of masculinity, while “Cry to Me,” a cover of the Solomon Burke soul classic, reveals the band's willingness to embrace tenderness without abandoning their rough-edged sound.

Musically, Joy as an Act of Resistance. is a masterclass in controlled chaos. Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan's guitars grind, scrape, and collide over Adam Devonshire's muscular bass and Jon Beavis's relentless drumming. The arrangements draw from post-punk, noise rock, hardcore, and classic British punk, but the band's emphasis on rhythm and repetition makes the songs as physically exhilarating as they are confrontational.

What makes the album endure is its refusal to confuse cynicism with intelligence. IDLES confront nationalism, misogyny, grief, and social division without surrendering to hopelessness. Beneath the noise is a simple but powerful conviction that empathy, solidarity, and vulnerability can be forms of resistance.

Loud, funny, heartbreaking, and defiantly compassionate, Joy as an Act of Resistance. remains one of the defining British punk records of its generation. It's a reminder that sometimes the most confrontational thing a band can do is insist on joy.
