Karen y Los Remedios - Bestiaria

Karen y Los Remedios have given their singular Gothicumbia a mythology of its own. On Bestiaria, goddesses, witches, nymphs, healers, and supernatural creatures inhabit twelve songs where cumbia rhythms move through trip-hop shadows and dreamlike electronics.

Released in 2026 on ZZK Records, Bestiaria follows 2023’s Silencio and expands the Mexican trio’s already distinctive fusion of cumbia rebajada, dark electronics, trip-hop, and dream pop. Ana Karen G. Barajas is joined by guitarist Guillermo Berbeyer, aka Z.A.M.P.A., and producer Jiony, creating music that remains rooted in Latin American rhythm while venturing further into atmospheric and cinematic territory.

The album is structured like a twelve-card tarot spread, with each song centered around a different female figure drawn from mythology, folklore, spirituality, and the natural world. These characters become vessels for ideas about desire, motherhood, vulnerability, memory, transformation, death, and feminine power.

“Curandera” opens the record with spectral vocals, ominous synthesizers, and a heavy rhythmic pulse, immediately establishing Bestiaria’s mystical atmosphere. “Mayahuel” invokes the Aztec goddess associated with agave and fertility, while “Ninfa” transforms the mythological water nymph into a meditation on impermanence and desire, surrounding Ana Karen’s ethereal vocal with subtle percussion, processed guitar, and trip-hop production.

Elsewhere, “Creación del Universo” becomes more luminous and expansive, layering melodic guitar and vocals around a creation myth born from love. “Ixchel,” “Las Moiras,” “La Bruja,” “Alucarda,” and “Quimera” continue building the album’s personal bestiary, drawing different cultural traditions into the same shadowy universe.

That concept makes Bestiaria feel particularly suited to Karen y Los Remedios. Their music has always occupied an unusual territory between the dance floor and something more introspective, and here Gothicumbia becomes less a genre tag than an entire world: traditional and electronic, sensual and ominous, deeply Latin American yet difficult to place within any conventional scene.

This deluxe vinyl edition is pressed on 140-gram iridescent green vinyl and limited to 500 copies, housed in a glossy gatefold jacket designed to extend the album’s visual and mythological world.
