Lust For Youth - International

With International, Lust For Youth stepped out of the shadows. The melancholy remained, but suddenly the lights were brighter, the melodies bigger, and the dancefloor much closer.

Released in 2014 on Sacred Bones Records, International marked a significant expansion of the project Hannes Norrvide had begun as a stark, lo-fi synth endeavor. Working with Loke Rahbek and Malthe Fischer, Lust For Youth transformed into a trio and embraced a cleaner, more melodic sound rooted in synth-pop, new wave, and electronic dance music while retaining the emotional distance of their earlier work.

The change is immediately apparent on “Epoetin Alfa,” whose gleaming synthesizers and propulsive rhythm feel almost euphoric compared with the project's more austere beginnings. “Illume,” “New Boys,” “Armida,” and “Running” continue that trajectory, pairing crisp electronic percussion and sweeping synth lines with Norrvide’s cool, yearning vocals. Beneath the polished surfaces, however, runs a persistent sense of loneliness and romantic disconnection.

That contradiction is what makes International so compelling. These are songs designed to move, yet they rarely feel carefree. Lust For Youth use the vocabulary of European synth-pop and club music to explore isolation, desire, fleeting intimacy, and the strange melancholy that can exist in even the most crowded room.

Rather than abandoning the project's coldwave origins, International opens them up, replacing claustrophobia with widescreen electronic pop while preserving the emotional unease underneath.

Sleek, melancholic, and quietly euphoric, International remains a pivotal Lust For Youth record and an essential piece of the 2010s synth-pop and darkwave revival.
