Darkwave becomes something theatrical and deeply intimate on Madeline Goldstein's Other World.
Originally released in 2023, the four-track EP finds the Los Angeles artist blending darkwave, synth-pop, dream pop, and new wave into a sound built as much around emotional drama as the dancefloor. Working with producer and synthesist Matia Simovich, known for his work with SRSQ, Riki, and Body of Light, Goldstein surrounds her songwriting with richly textured electronics and an unmistakable sense of atmosphere.
Across "Seed of Doubt," "Death's Door," "Edges of the Lines," and the title track, synthesizers move between icy restraint and sweeping romanticism while steady electronic rhythms give the songs their pulse. Goldstein's voice remains the centerpiece, delivering the material with a dramatic intensity that recalls the grandeur of '80s pop without simply recreating it.
The title track is particularly striking, conceived by Goldstein as a kind of theatrical ballad centered on loneliness, desire, and the difficulty of expressing what you truly want. Its unexpected tenor saxophone adds another dimension to the EP's already cinematic atmosphere.
