Before Mandy, Indiana became one of the more confrontational voices in experimental post-punk, there was …, a compact introduction to a band already intent on making discomfort feel exhilarating.
Released in 2021, the EP collects the Manchester-based group’s earliest material, bringing together the tracks that first established their abrasive collision of post-punk, industrial electronics, noise rock, and club music. Rather than settling into a conventional guitar-band framework, Mandy, Indiana treat rhythm, texture, and sheer physical impact as equally important components of the songs.
Valentine Caulfield’s French-language vocals move between icy detachment, spoken incantation, and sudden flashes of intensity, while Scott Fair’s guitar is frequently manipulated until its origins become difficult to recognize. Distortion, electronics, pounding percussion, and cavernous production turn the music into something architectural, with sounds appearing to ricochet through abandoned warehouses and concrete tunnels.
“Alien 3,” “Nike of Samothrace,” and “Bottle Episode” demonstrate just how effectively the band can create tension through repetition. There are traces of industrial, noise, techno, and the more experimental fringes of post-punk, but the results resist easy classification. Even at their most abrasive, these tracks possess a distinctly physical pulse beneath the noise.
… is less a preliminary sketch than an early declaration of intent. Claustrophobic, hypnotic, and thrillingly hostile, the EP established the fundamental language Mandy, Indiana would continue to develop: post-punk dismantled and rebuilt with the machinery of industrial and underground electronic music.
