MF Doom - MM..Food

Only MF DOOM could build an entire rap album around food and emerge with one of underground hip-hop’s defining records. On MM..FOOD, every meal becomes a metaphor, every sample feels like a secret passage, and the metal-masked villain sounds completely at home in his own bizarre universe.

Originally released in 2004, MM..FOOD arrived during an extraordinary creative period for Daniel Dumile. Rather than treating its culinary concept as a gimmick, DOOM uses food as an endlessly flexible language for rhymes about rap beef, excess, friendship, betrayal, ego, vice, and the absurdities of the music industry.

“Beef Rapp” establishes the premise immediately, twisting food terminology into warnings about conflict and bravado. “Hoe Cakes” follows with one of the album’s most infectious beats, while “Potholderz” featuring Count Bass D turns verbal dexterity into a competitive sport. Then comes “One Beer,” produced by Madlib, pairing one of DOOM’s most memorable performances with a woozy beat originally created during the sessions that produced Madvillainy.

The album’s centerpiece becomes increasingly strange. “Poo-Putt Platter,” “Fillet-O-Rapper,” “Gumbo,” and “Fig Leaf Bi-Carbonate” form a surreal collage of instrumentals, dialogue, samples, and vintage superhero ephemera before DOOM returns to the microphone for the closing stretch.

Among those later tracks is “Rapp Snitch Knishes,” featuring the mysterious Mr. Fantastik, one of DOOM’s most enduring songs. Its instantly recognizable guitar loop supports a hilariously sharp critique of rappers incriminating themselves through their own lyrics. “Vomitspit” and “Kookies” complete a record overflowing with the dense internal rhymes, unexpected punchlines, dusty samples, and comic-book mythology that made DOOM such a singular figure.

Most of MM..FOOD was produced by DOOM himself, making the record as much a showcase for his production instincts as his writing. Beats feel deliberately rough around the edges, stitched together from jazz, soul, dialogue, and pop-culture fragments into a world where the mundane and surreal constantly overlap.

This 2026 Rhymesayers 20th Anniversary Edition presents the album across two black vinyl LPs, housed in a case-wrapped tip-on gatefold jacket with completely new artwork by Sam Rodriguez. It also includes access to the interactive MM..FOOD Diner augmented-reality experience.

More than two decades after its original release, MM..FOOD remains quintessential DOOM: funny without being lightweight, intricate without becoming inaccessible, and packed with enough lyrical and production details to reveal something new every time the menu comes back around.
