Sin, salvation, cheap horror movies, and irresistible industrial dance grooves. On Confessions Of A Knife..., My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult perfected their peculiar brand of electronic debauchery, creating one of the most distinctive and entertaining albums to emerge from Chicago's legendary Wax Trax! scene.
Originally released in 1990 through Wax Trax! Records, Confessions Of A Knife... was the band's second full-length album and a pivotal moment in their evolution. Following 1988's I See Good Spirits And I See Bad Spirits, founding members Groovie Mann and Buzz McCoy pushed their fascination with religious imagery, exploitation cinema, and underground dance culture into increasingly outrageous territory.
The album's sound is a wonderfully strange collision of industrial, EBM, acid house, psychedelic rock, and electronic funk. Drum machines and pulsing bass lines provide the foundation, while distorted vocals, hypnotic synthesizers, and a seemingly endless collection of film samples turn each track into a miniature piece of cinematic mischief.
“A Daisy Chain 4 Satan (Acid & Flowers Mix)” remains one of Thrill Kill Kult's defining recordings, combining a relentless electronic groove with sinister samples and the band's unmistakable sense of humor. It's dark, danceable, and gloriously excessive, a perfect example of how they could make industrial music feel simultaneously threatening and absurd.
“The Days Of Swine & Roses” takes a similarly infectious approach, layering provocative vocal samples over driving electronic rhythms, while “Hand In Hand” and “Ride The Mindway” explore the album's more hypnotic and psychedelic tendencies. Elsewhere, “Rivers Of Blood, Years Of Darkness” brings a heavier atmosphere, demonstrating that beneath the camp theatrics was a band capable of creating genuinely unsettling music.
Much of the album's personality comes from its inventive use of sampling. Snippets of dialogue, religious proclamations, and lurid cinematic fragments appear throughout, blurring the boundaries between music, performance art, and B-movie soundtrack. Rather than simply decorating the songs, these samples become part of the arrangements themselves, giving the record its unmistakable identity.
At a time when industrial music was increasingly associated with aggression and confrontation, Thrill Kill Kult embraced pleasure, absurdity, and the dance floor. Their music retained the genre's mechanical rhythms and abrasive textures but introduced a sense of decadence that anticipated the industrial-dance crossover of the early 1990s.
Confessions Of A Knife... remains a high point in the band's catalog and an essential document of the original Wax Trax! era. Sleazy, psychedelic, irreverent, and packed with unforgettable grooves, it's industrial music with a wicked grin and absolutely no intention of behaving itself.
