Nouvelle Vague - A Date with Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode songs have always contained more than the machines surrounding them. On A Date with Depeche Mode, Nouvelle Vague strip thirteen of those songs from their familiar electronic settings and uncover the melodies, melancholy, sensuality, and vulnerability underneath.

More than twenty years after their self-titled debut turned post-punk and new wave standards into unlikely bossa nova, jazz, and French pop, Nouvelle Vague devote an entire album to one of the most influential electronic bands of the past four decades.

Recorded between Rio de Janeiro and Paris, A Date with Depeche Mode applies the Nouvelle Vague philosophy to thirteen songs drawn from across Depeche Mode’s catalog. Synthesizers and programmed rhythms give way to warmer, organic arrangements shaped by bossa nova, jazz, French pop, and Latin music, shifting the focus toward the songwriting at the center of Martin Gore’s compositions.

The selections reach well beyond the obvious hits. “Enjoy the Silence,” “Personal Jesus,” “Stripped,” and “Just Can’t Get Enough” sit alongside deeper cuts such as fan favorite “Ice Machine,” allowing the project to move between different periods of Depeche Mode while maintaining a cohesive identity of its own.

As with Nouvelle Vague’s earlier work, the voices are essential to the transformation. The album brings together an international cast of guest vocalists including Skye Edwards of Morcheeba, Beth Hirsch, Flavia Coelho, Mélanie Pain, Phoebe Killdeer, and Fredrika Stahl. Each singer approaches the material differently, turning familiar songs into intimate encounters rather than straightforward covers.

That approach is particularly well suited to Depeche Mode. Beneath the electronics, their catalog has always been filled with blues, gospel, pop, torch-song romanticism, and songs about desire, faith, guilt, isolation, and obsession. Removing the familiar production reveals just how durable those compositions are when transported into entirely different musical surroundings.

Released in 2026 through Le Label, A Date with Depeche Mode arrives as a 13-track vinyl LP, continuing Nouvelle Vague’s long-running conversation with the music that shaped the post-punk and new wave era.

Rather than trying to recreate Depeche Mode, Nouvelle Vague change the scenery completely. The machines disappear, the lights dim, and songs we've known for decades suddenly feel strangely intimate again.
