Few records cast a longer shadow over Spanish goth than El Acto. Parálisis Permanente made only one album, but its collision of punk urgency, deathrock darkness, and raw sexuality helped define Spain’s emerging siniestro scene almost as soon as it arrived.
Released in 1982, El Acto grew out of Madrid’s rapidly evolving post-punk underground. Parálisis Permanente had been formed the previous year by Eduardo Benavente and Nacho Canut, then members of Alaska y los Pegamoides. By the time the album was recorded, Benavente had become the group’s central figure, joined by Ana Curra, Rafa Balmaseda, and Johnny Canut.
What separated Parálisis Permanente from much of the surrounding Movida Madrileña was just how far into the darkness they were willing to go. British post-punk and goth provided obvious reference points, but El Acto doesn't simply imitate Bauhaus, Killing Joke, The Cure, or The Damned. The band filters those influences through the immediacy of Spanish punk, with Benavente's buried vocals, serrated guitar, primitive rhythms, and lyrics preoccupied with sex, violence, alienation, obsession, and death.
“Adictos a la lujuria” establishes that atmosphere immediately, while “Vamos a jugar,” “Te gustará,” and “Jugando a las cartas” maintain the record's nervous momentum. The title track is one of its starkest statements, surrounded by songs like “Bacanal,” “Todo el mundo,” “Tengo un pasajero,” and “Esa extraña sonrisa.”
Two covers reveal the band's lineage particularly well. David Bowie’s “Heroes” is pulled into their colder world, while The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” recast as “Quiero ser tu perro,” connects their emerging gothic sound directly back to proto-punk.
The story of Parálisis Permanente would end almost impossibly early. Benavente died in a car accident in May 1983, while the band was still ascending, leaving El Acto as their only full-length studio album. The tragedy inevitably became part of the record's mythology, but its reputation rests on far more than what might have been. El Acto remains one of the foundational recordings of Spanish post-punk and gothic rock.
This 2026 Warner Music Spain reissue returns the album to vinyl on transparent red wax, retaining its original 13-song sequence.
Dark, provocative, and startlingly assured for a band whose story had barely begun, El Acto isn't merely a cult artifact of the Movida Madrileña. It is one of the records that gave Spanish goth its own identity.
