Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up

“Cuts You Up” was the song that carried Peter Murphy out of Bauhaus’ enormous shadow and into an identity entirely his own. Elegant, romantic, and instantly recognizable, it remains one of alternative music’s defining singles of the era.

Released as a single in 1990 from Murphy’s third solo album, Deep, “Cuts You Up” brought together the atmospheric darkness of his earlier work with a newfound melodic confidence. Written by Peter Murphy and Paul Statham and produced by Simon Rogers, the song is driven by acoustic guitar, an insistent rhythm, and that unforgettable string-like melody, creating something simultaneously melancholic and strangely uplifting.

Murphy’s vocal is equally crucial. Gone is much of the confrontational theatricality associated with Bauhaus. Instead, he delivers the song with restraint, allowing its romantic ambiguity and sense of longing to carry the drama. The result retains enough gothic atmosphere to remain unmistakably Murphy while opening into the broader alternative and college-rock landscape of the period.

It connected. “Cuts You Up” became Murphy’s biggest solo hit, spending seven weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart and propelling Deep to a much wider audience.

This 1990 U.S. 12-inch pressing on Beggars Banquet/RCA is an especially strong presentation of the Deep era. It includes both the 4:13 edit and full 5:24 LP version of “Cuts You Up,” alongside the expansive “Roll Call (Reprise)” and “A Strange Kind Of Love (Version II).” The latter provides another side of Deep’s romantic melancholy, while the eight-minute “Roll Call” reprise pushes Murphy’s atmospheric instincts into considerably more spacious territory.

More than simply Peter Murphy’s commercial breakthrough, “Cuts You Up” became one of the songs that helped define the point where goth, post-punk, and alternative rock crossed into the mainstream without completely surrendering their atmosphere.

Decades later, its opening notes remain unmistakable. “Cuts You Up” is Peter Murphy at his most accessible without compromise: romantic, enigmatic, beautifully arranged, and still capable of stopping a darkened dance floor in its tracks.
