At the dawn of the millennium, Primal Scream sounded like they wanted to tear the whole system down. XTRMNTR took rock, techno, dub, noise, free jazz, and industrial electronics and weaponized them into one of the most confrontational records of the band’s career.
Originally released in 2000, XTRMNTR followed Vanishing Point and pushed that album’s electronic experimentation into considerably more hostile territory. Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes were increasingly working from their North London “Bunker” studio, constructing music around rhythms, textures, samples, and electronics rather than conventional rock-band arrangements. The result was an album that could move between furious guitar noise and underground club music without treating either as a novelty.
“Kill All Hippies” opens with a menacing electronic crawl before “Accelerator” detonates into distorted garage-rock overload. “Swastika Eyes” turns political disgust into pounding electro, appearing here in both the Jagz Kooner and Chemical Brothers mixes, while “Pills” and “Blood Money” plunge deeper into paranoia and electronic abrasion.
Then comes “MBV Arkestra (If They Move Kill ’Em),” where Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine transforms the band’s psychedelic tendencies into an enormous wall of noise. “Shoot Speed / Kill Light” closes the original album with the same combination of repetition, distortion, and barely contained aggression that runs through the entire record.
What makes XTRMNTR endure is that its fury never overwhelms its sense of experimentation. Krautrock, dub, techno, industrial music, punk, psychedelia, hip-hop production, and free-jazz chaos continually bleed into one another. Its political preoccupations with authoritarianism, corporate power, war, and social control also give the record an uncomfortable relevance decades later.
This 2026 expanded edition has been newly mastered by Matt Colton at Metropolis Studios under the supervision of Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes and pressed across two red vinyl LPs. Alongside the original album are five additional tracks, including the previously unreleased “The Reckoning” and “5 Years Ahead Of My Time (Brendan Lynch Mix),” plus “When The Kingdom Comes,” the Massive Attack remix of “Exterminator,” and “The Revenge Of The Hammond Connection.” New liner notes by author Darran Anderson complete the edition.
Part of Primal Scream’s newly expanded “Bunker Trilogy” alongside Vanishing Point and Evil Heat, this edition gives one of their most radical records the treatment it deserves.
XTRMNTR remains Primal Scream at their most volatile: protest music built from feedback, machines, bass pressure, and the conviction that rock ’n’ roll should still be dangerous.
