Grief hangs heavy over Consolation, but it never settles into stillness.
Released in 2018, this EP finds Protomartyr channeling loss into something restrained and deliberate. It’s quieter than much of their catalog, but the tension remains, just pulled inward rather than pushed out.
The arrangements are sparse and measured. Guitars move in slow, deliberate lines, bass sits low and steady, and the rhythms feel almost suspended at times. There’s a subtle shift in tone across the EP, with moments of warmth and reflection breaking through the band’s usual austerity. Joe Casey’s vocals remain central, delivering lines with a weary, contemplative weight.
Consolation works as a focused, intimate release. It captures Protomartyr stepping back just enough to let emotion surface in a different way, quieter, but no less impactful.
