Red Lorry Yellow Lorry rarely needed ornamentation. “Cut Down” works through sheer pressure: pounding drums, grinding guitar, relentless bass, and Chris Reed’s voice emerging from the machinery like a warning.
Released in 1986 on Red Rhino Records, “Cut Down” arrived during the same period as the Leeds band’s second album, Paint Your Wagon. By this point, the Lorries had refined the stark attack of their earliest singles into something brutally efficient, retaining post-punk’s austerity while pushing rhythm and distortion toward the heavier end of the emerging gothic rock underground.
At the center was Chris Reed, whose songwriting and deep, detached vocal delivery gave the band much of its unmistakable character. “Cut Down” surrounds him with the kind of arrangement Red Lorry Yellow Lorry did particularly well: guitar used as texture and impact rather than decoration, bass pushed prominently into the mix, and drums maintaining an almost martial momentum.
The result is dark without relying on theatricality. Where some of their contemporaries embraced gothic romanticism, the Lorries often sounded harsher and more industrial, drawing atmosphere from repetition, volume, and physical rhythm. “Cut Down” is a particularly concentrated example, carrying the claustrophobic tension of their early work while hitting with the confidence of a band already several years into defining its own sound.
This original 1986 UK 12-inch on Red Rhino Records pairs “Cut Down” with “Running Fever” and “Pushed Me,” two additional non-album recordings from the period. Together they make the single considerably more than an isolated A-side, extending the hard-edged sound surrounding Paint Your Wagon beyond the album itself.
“Cut Down” would remain an important part of the band’s early catalog and later appear alongside the Paint Your Wagon material on retrospective collections. It’s easy to understand why. Cold, muscular, repetitive, and stripped of anything unnecessary, it captures the qualities that made Red Lorry Yellow Lorry one of the most distinctive bands to emerge from the darker side of the Leeds post-punk scene.
