Riki - Hot City

“Hot City” sounds like a transmission from an imagined 1980s metropolis after midnight: neon reflecting off wet pavement, synthesizers glowing through the fog, and Riki’s voice drifting somewhere between romantic detachment and invitation.

Released in 2020 on Dais Records, “Hot City” arrived alongside Riki’s self-titled debut album and distilled much of what made the Los Angeles artist’s early work so immediately distinctive. The project of Niff Nawor, Riki draws from synth-pop, new wave, Italo disco, minimal wave, and European electronic pop, embracing the elegance of those influences without simply reproducing them.

The track is built around an irresistible sequenced bassline, crisp electronic percussion, and layers of gleaming synthesizer. Rather than the deliberately austere approach common to minimal synth, “Hot City” feels lush and romantic, with an undercurrent of melancholy running beneath its dance-floor momentum. Riki’s vocal completes the illusion, cool and poised but never emotionless.

That combination places the song somewhere between the darker edges of Italo disco and classic new wave, with traces of early synth-pop and continental European club music running throughout. It’s nostalgic in texture but unusually assured in execution, treating the sounds of the past as a vocabulary rather than a costume.

The 12-inch format is particularly appropriate. “Hot City” is fundamentally dance music, and its extended presentation allows the rhythm and synthesizer arrangement to become increasingly hypnotic. The record also serves as an ideal companion to Riki’s debut LP, isolating one of its most immediate tracks and giving its sleek electronic production room to breathe.

What makes “Hot City” endure beyond its retro touchstones is the strength of the songwriting underneath them. Strip away the vintage drum machines and icy synthesizers and there is still a remarkably effective pop song at its center.

Elegant, nocturnal, romantic, and built for movement, “Hot City” is Riki at her most immediate: modern dark synth-pop illuminated by the neon glow of new wave and Italo disco.
