Silence Yourself doesn’t ease its way into the room. It demands your attention and then refuses to relinquish it.

Released in 2013, the debut album from London’s Savages arrived amid endless comparisons to post-punk’s late-’70s and early-’80s foundations, but the band’s intensity quickly made those references feel secondary. Jehnny Beth, Gemma Thompson, Ayşe Hassan, and Fay Milton take the tension, space, and rhythmic severity of post-punk and turn them into something fiercely immediate.

Hassan’s muscular basslines and Milton’s precise, forceful drumming give the record its formidable pulse, while Thompson’s guitar alternates between serrated bursts of noise, sheets of feedback, and eerie atmospheric space. At the center is Beth, whose commanding vocals can move from a low, controlled warning to a full-throated howl in seconds. The production wisely leaves plenty of air between the instruments, making every sudden eruption hit harder.

“Shut Up” opens the album with a statement of purpose before exploding into one of its most propulsive performances. “She Will,” “I Am Here,” and “Husbands” maintain that nervous physicality, while slower moments such as “Waiting for a Sign” reveal just how effectively Savages could create menace through restraint.

There’s a broader philosophy behind the record’s severity. Silence Yourself confronts distraction, overstimulation, desire, and the difficulty of maintaining genuine connection amid constant noise. That tension between internal thought and external chaos gives the album a weight that extends beyond its post-punk aesthetics.

Urgent, austere, and remarkably self-assured, Silence Yourself remains one of the defining post-punk debuts of the 2010s, a record that drew from the genre’s history without allowing itself to become trapped by it.

How we grade vinyl

All used vinyl are fully tested to ensure accuracy. We follow the Goldmine standard and grade conservatively.

Here’s how we rate:

  • Mint (M): Perfect, sealed, or unplayed.
  • Near Mint (NM): Looks and plays like new with minimal signs of handling.
  • Very Good+ (VG+): A few light cosmetic marks or faint surface noise.
  • Very Good (VG): Noticeable wear and some background noise, but no skips or major flaws.
  • Good (G): Heavier wear and noise, but still listenable.
  • Fair (F): Heavily worn or noisy—priced accordingly and sold as-is.
