Schwefelgelb - Dahinter Das Gesicht (Remastered)

Before Schwefelgelb became fixtures of the dark techno and EBM underground, Dahinter Das Gesicht captured the Berlin duo in a colder, leaner form, where minimal synth discipline met the physical pulse of electronic body music.

Originally released in 2010, Dahinter Das Gesicht belongs to the early period of Sid Lamar and Eddy Coup, when Schwefelgelb were developing the severe electronic language that would eventually carry them from the wave underground into techno clubs across Europe. Synthesizers are stripped to sharp melodic figures, drum machines strike with mechanical precision, and German-language vocals add another layer of austerity to the music.

What makes these recordings particularly compelling is the balance between minimal wave, synth-punk, EBM, and early electro. The machinery is rigid, but the songs never feel static. Bass sequences continually push forward while terse vocals and abrasive synthesizer textures create an atmosphere that can feel confrontational one moment and unexpectedly infectious the next.

Heard alongside Schwefelgelb’s later work, Dahinter Das Gesicht also reveals how much of their future identity was already present. The duo would eventually emphasize harder rhythms and increasingly physical club production, becoming closely associated with the modern resurgence of EBM and industrial techno. Here, however, those impulses remain intertwined with the colder, more skeletal aesthetics of the late-2000s minimal synth revival.

That tension gives the record its character. Rather than reproducing ’80s body music, Schwefelgelb use its economy and repetition as raw materials, combining them with the harsher electronic sensibility that would increasingly define Berlin’s underground during the following decade.

This remastered vinyl edition brings Schwefelgelb’s early material back into circulation with renewed clarity and impact, giving the stark synthesizers, vocals, and machine rhythms greater presence while retaining the stripped-down character of the original recordings.

Dahinter Das Gesicht is an illuminating look at Schwefelgelb before their sound became synonymous with pounding contemporary EBM: cold, minimal, wiry electronic music already showing the rhythmic obsession that would eventually make the duo such a formidable presence on the dance floor.
