Before Shadow Project became one of American deathrock's most compelling acts, Rozz Williams and Eva O were already exploring the volatile chemistry that would define the band. The Original Tapes 1988 reaches back to those earliest recordings, documenting the raw beginnings of a collaboration that brought together two of the underground's most distinctive personalities.
Recorded in 1988, these sessions predate Shadow Project's self-titled debut and offer a glimpse into the project's formative period. Williams had already established himself as a central figure in American gothic rock through Christian Death, while guitarist and vocalist Eva O brought her own confrontational style and dark musical sensibility to their partnership.
Together, they developed music that drew from the theatrical darkness of early Christian Death while pursuing something more abrasive, intimate, and unpredictable. The result occupied a particularly unsettling space between deathrock, gothic punk, and experimental rock, with Williams' haunted vocals and Eva O's guitar work forming the core of the sound.
What makes these early recordings especially interesting is their lack of polish. Rather than the more developed arrangements of Shadow Project's later albums, the material preserves the immediacy of musicians experimenting with ideas that had yet to settle into a definitive form. The rougher textures and unvarnished performances give the songs a sense of urgency that would be difficult to recreate in a conventional studio setting.
That historical context is important. By the late 1980s, much of gothic rock had moved toward increasingly elaborate production and larger audiences. Shadow Project instead remained connected to the more confrontational traditions of the Los Angeles deathrock underground, where horror imagery, punk aggression, and deeply personal expression existed side by side.
Williams and Eva O would eventually develop that partnership across Shadow Project's subsequent recordings, creating music that remained inseparable from the complicated artistic and personal relationship between them. These 1988 tapes reveal the beginnings of that process, before the project had fully established its identity.
The Original Tapes 1988 is a fascinating document of American deathrock history. Raw, intimate, and steeped in the atmosphere of the Los Angeles underground, it preserves an early chapter in the creative partnership of Rozz Williams and Eva O, two artists whose influence continues to resonate throughout gothic and alternative music.
