Few songs are as inseparable from the 1980s as “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” One opening drum crack, a shimmering guitar figure, and Jim Kerr’s unmistakable “Hey, hey, hey, hey” are enough to summon an entire era.
Released in 1985, “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” became the song that transformed Simple Minds from critically respected post-punk and new wave veterans into international stars. Ironically, the band didn’t write it. Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff composed the track for John Hughes’ The Breakfast Club, and Simple Minds initially hesitated to record material written by outsiders before eventually agreeing to make it their own.
That decision changed their career.
Producer Forsey gives the recording enormous scale without sacrificing its simplicity. Charlie Burchill’s chiming guitar, Derek Forbes’ bass, Mel Gaynor’s thunderous drums, and layers of synthesizer create an arrangement built for arenas, while Jim Kerr delivers the lyric with a mixture of romantic longing and defiant optimism. The improvised “la-la-la” refrain that carries the song toward its conclusion became every bit as recognizable as the chorus itself.
Its placement over the final scene of The Breakfast Club cemented the association. As Judd Nelson’s John Bender walks across the football field and raises his fist, the song turns a teenage film ending into one of the defining pop-cultural images of the decade. Outside the film, it became a phenomenon in its own right, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and introducing Simple Minds to an enormous new audience.
This 1985 12-inch single gives the track additional room through the extended version, emphasizing the rhythm section and widescreen production that made it such an effective crossover between new wave, synth-pop, alternative rock, and dance music.
Simple Minds would go on to score major hits with songs they wrote themselves, but “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” remains impossible to separate from their legacy. Romantic, triumphant, and gloriously oversized, it is one of those rare singles that became bigger than the film, the band, and eventually the decade that produced it.
