Siouxsie & The Banshees - The Scream

Few debut albums sound as though they’re inventing their own language in real time. The Scream is one of them.

Originally released in 1978, Siouxsie And The Banshees’ debut emerged from the aftermath of punk but immediately pushed beyond its limitations. Rather than relying on speed and aggression alone, the band embraced space, tension, repetition, and dissonance, helping establish a vocabulary that would become fundamental to post-punk and, soon after, gothic rock.

John McKay’s guitar rarely behaves like a conventional rock instrument, slicing through the songs in metallic shards and abrasive textures while Steven Severin’s bass provides their ominous foundation. Kenny Morris’ tom-heavy, almost tribal drumming adds to the sense of unease. At the center, Siouxsie Sioux delivers an extraordinary performance, commanding and confrontational one moment, coldly detached the next.

“Hong Kong Garden” may have introduced the band to the wider public, but The Scream reveals something considerably stranger. “Jigsaw Feeling,” “Metal Postcard (Mittageisen),” “Mirage,” and the unsettling reconstruction of the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” show a group dismantling familiar rock structures and rebuilding them in darker, more angular forms. The closing “Switch” pushes that experimentation even further, ending the record in a state of controlled disorientation.

This 2018 vinyl reissue was remastered from the original ¼-inch analogue tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, giving the stark dynamics and cavernous spaces of the original recording room to breathe.

The Scream remains one of the foundational records of British post-punk, but its importance extends far beyond historical influence. Severe, atmospheric, and startlingly original, it still sounds like music made without a rulebook.
