By 1982, The Damned had long since proven they weren’t interested in remaining within punk’s original boundaries. Strawberries is where their increasingly adventurous songwriting blossomed into something colorful, theatrical, and unmistakably their own.
Originally released in 1982, the band’s fifth studio album builds on the psychedelic and gothic tendencies of The Black Album, mixing punk energy with ’60s psychedelia, melodic pop, dramatic keyboards, and the darker atmosphere that would become increasingly associated with their work. Captain Sensible’s guitar playing is especially expansive, while Dave Vanian sounds perfectly at home moving between snarling punk vocals and the crooning, theatrical delivery that had become his signature.
“Dozen Girls” kicks with classic Damned irreverence, while “Generals” pairs political frustration with one of the album’s strongest hooks. “Ignite” is pure melodic punk exhilaration, and the wonderfully strange “Life Goes On” revolves around a hypnotic bassline and dreamy atmosphere that feels worlds removed from the frantic attack of the band’s 1977 debut. Across the record, keyboards and psychedelic textures give the songs a richness that distinguishes Strawberries from much of the British punk landscape surrounding it.
The album also represents the end of an important chapter. It was the final Damned studio album to feature Captain Sensible before his departure for a solo career, making Strawberries something of a culmination of the increasingly ambitious musical direction the band had pursued with him.
This reissue returns Strawberries to vinyl just a few years after its original release, preserving an essential chapter from one of The Damned’s most adventurous periods.
Often overshadowed by Damned Damned Damned, Machine Gun Etiquette, and The Black Album, Strawberries deserves its own place in the band’s story. Psychedelic, melodic, eccentric, and tinged with gothic darkness, it captures The Damned at their most adventurous.
