Few bands carried the spirit of gothic rock into the late 1980s with as much ambition as The Mission. With their sweeping guitars, romantic melodrama, and anthems built for enormous rooms, Wayne Hussey and company helped transform the genre's underground intensity into something grander without entirely losing its darker roots. Resurrection: The Best Of brings that legacy into focus.
Formed in Leeds in 1985 by former Sisters of Mercy members Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams, The Mission quickly established an identity of their own. Where their previous band favored stark drum machines and icy restraint, The Mission embraced layered acoustic and electric guitars, psychedelic textures, and a more expansive approach to songwriting. The result was a distinctive blend of gothic rock, post-punk, and alternative rock that found a devoted audience on both sides of the Atlantic.
The band's early recordings established the blueprint. “Serpent's Kiss” and “Garden of Delight” introduced their combination of driving rhythms and swirling guitars, while “Wasteland” became one of the defining songs of the British goth scene. Their music could be atmospheric and introspective, but it was equally capable of producing the kind of enormous, communal chorus that made their live performances legendary.
As The Mission developed, songs such as “Severina,” “Tower of Strength,” “Beyond the Pale,” and “Butterfly on a Wheel” revealed the breadth of Hussey's songwriting. Romantic longing, spiritual imagery, and emotional turmoil ran through the lyrics, supported by arrangements that moved between delicate acoustic passages and towering walls of guitar.
What distinguishes The Mission from many of their contemporaries is the sense of scale. Their music draws as much from the psychedelic rock of the 1960s and the dramatic ambition of classic rock as it does from post-punk's darker atmosphere. Yet beneath the elaborate production and expansive melodies remains a band with a powerful instinct for rhythm, tension, and unforgettable hooks.
Resurrection: The Best Of offers an accessible overview of that musical identity, bringing together the dramatic songwriting and unmistakable guitar sound that helped make The Mission one of gothic rock's most enduring names.
For longtime followers, it's a reminder of just how many essential songs emerged from the band's early years. For newcomers, it's an introduction to a group that made gothic rock sound simultaneously intimate, theatrical, and larger than life.
