The Sisters Of Mercy - The Reptile House EP (2023 RSD Edition)

Vinyl, 12", 45 RPM, EP, Record Store Day, Reissue, Grey Smokey, 180g

Genre(s):

  • Goth Rock

Before First and Last and Always, before the major-label years, and before The Sisters of Mercy became synonymous with gothic rock, there was The Reptile House. Five songs of suffocating atmosphere, skeletal drum-machine rhythms, and Andrew Eldritch's cavernous baritone, documenting the band at their most mysterious and uncompromising.

Originally released in May 1983 on the band's own Merciful Release label, The Reptile House E.P. marked a decisive step in The Sisters of Mercy's evolution. Recorded during their early Leeds period, the EP pushed beyond the relatively direct post-punk attack of their first singles into something slower, more abstract, and deeply unsettling.

By this point, Andrew Eldritch, Gary Marx, and Craig Adams had developed a distinctive musical chemistry, with the ever-present drum machine known as Doktor Avalanche providing the mechanical pulse beneath their increasingly atmospheric arrangements.

The opening “Kiss the Carpet” establishes the EP's oppressive mood with nearly six minutes of echoing guitar, ominous bass, and Eldritch's spectral vocal. Rather than building toward a conventional chorus, the song unfolds through repetition and tension, drawing the listener deeper into its claustrophobic atmosphere.

“Lights” continues that sense of disorientation, while “Valentine” brings a sharper melodic focus without sacrificing the record's underlying unease. “Fix” is perhaps the EP's most hypnotic moment, reducing the band's sound to a relentless mechanical rhythm and fragments of distorted guitar. The closing “Burn” provides a final surge of intensity, its insistent pulse and swirling textures suggesting the more expansive sound the band would eventually develop.

What makes The Reptile House so remarkable is its restraint. Where later gothic rock would frequently embrace grand arrangements and theatrical production, these recordings achieve their impact through minimalism, repetition, and the uneasy spaces between sounds. The guitars seem to emerge from a dense fog, the bass moves with deliberate weight, and Eldritch's voice often feels less like a conventional lead vocal than another instrument in the atmosphere.

The EP also represents an important moment in the development of the British gothic underground. Alongside contemporaries such as Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy were helping establish a darker vocabulary for post-punk, one that would influence generations of gothic rock, darkwave, and industrial artists.

More than an early curiosity, The Reptile House is one of The Sisters of Mercy's most distinctive recordings: bleak, hypnotic, and beautifully unsettling, capturing a band discovering just how much darkness they could create with so little.
