What happens when the fractured electronics of Skinny Puppy meet the surreal, psychedelic imagination of The Legendary Pink Dots? Tired Eyes Slowly Burning offers one of the strangest and most rewarding answers, a hypnotic journey through industrial experimentation, dreamlike atmospheres, and beautifully unsettling songwriting.
Originally released in 1987 through Nettwerk Records, Tired Eyes Slowly Burning was the debut full-length album from The Tear Garden, the collaborative project formed by cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy and Edward Ka-Spel of The Legendary Pink Dots. The two had connected during the mid-1980s, discovering a shared interest in unconventional recording techniques, psychedelic experimentation, and music that existed well outside traditional rock structures.
The collaboration brought together two very different but remarkably compatible musical personalities. Key's intricate programming, synthesizer arrangements, and industrial rhythms provided the foundation, while Ka-Spel's distinctive vocals and surreal lyricism introduced an almost theatrical sense of unease. Fellow Skinny Puppy member Dwayne Goettel also contributed to the recordings, adding further depth to their experimental electronic sound.
Opening track “Déjà Vu” establishes the album's disorienting atmosphere, blending swirling electronics with Ka-Spel's unmistakable vocal delivery. “Room With a View” unfolds through shifting textures and hypnotic repetition, while “Coma” and “Valium” explore the more claustrophobic, psychologically unsettling side of the project.
The album's centerpiece is “You and Me and Rainbows,” a sprawling, nearly seventeen-minute composition that moves through multiple passages of psychedelic electronics, industrial percussion, and abstract sound design. It's an extraordinary piece of experimental music, equally indebted to the progressive ambitions of The Legendary Pink Dots and the darker electronic explorations of Skinny Puppy.
Closing track “Oo Ee Oo” reaches back to the project's earliest recordings, providing a fitting conclusion to an album that constantly shifts between playful experimentation and genuine unease.
Unlike the aggressive, confrontational industrial music associated with Skinny Puppy, Tired Eyes Slowly Burning often favors atmosphere over impact. Its arrangements are spacious and unpredictable, allowing strange melodies, manipulated voices, and electronic textures to develop at their own pace. There's a strong psychedelic undercurrent throughout, giving the record a distinctly dreamlike quality even during its most disturbing moments.
This 2026 Nettwerk reissue presents the album's original six-track vinyl program on 140-gram transparent blue vinyl, returning an important early chapter of experimental industrial music to the format.
Tired Eyes Slowly Burning remains one of the most fascinating intersections of the 1980s industrial and psychedelic undergrounds. Eerie, imaginative, and wonderfully difficult to categorize, it's a record that rewards deep listening and reveals just how adventurous electronic music could become when its creators abandoned conventional boundaries.
