Cold, brooding, and driven by some of the most hypnotic bass lines in American gothic rock, Masked established The Wake as one of the defining bands of the early ’90s goth underground. Their debut album remains a striking example of how the shadow of British post-punk took on a life of its own across the Atlantic.
Originally released in 1993 through Cleopatra Records, Masked introduced the Columbus, Ohio band to a wider audience at a time when gothic rock was increasingly fragmented between traditional guitar-driven groups and the emerging darkwave and industrial scenes. The Wake belonged firmly to the former, drawing on the atmosphere of The Sisters of Mercy, early The Mission, and The Chameleons while developing a sound distinguished by its melodic precision and relentless rhythmic momentum.
At the center is Troy Payne's deep, commanding vocal, surrounded by atmospheric guitar, prominent bass, and the mechanical pulse of programmed drums. The production is dark and spacious without losing its immediacy, allowing the songs to move between dance-floor urgency and more introspective passages.
“Nazarene” became one of The Wake's signature songs, combining an insistent bass line with shimmering guitar and a chorus that helped establish the band as a fixture of the American goth scene. “Sideshow” and “Locomotive Age” demonstrate their gift for propulsive gothic rock, while “Masked” and “Sheet Metal Eyes” explore the colder, more atmospheric side of their sound.
Elsewhere, the album's tension comes from the interplay between Payne's vocals and the band's tightly controlled arrangements. The guitars rarely dominate through sheer volume; instead, they create layers of echoing melody around bass and percussion that carry much of the music's physical weight. That approach gives Masked a distinctly post-punk character even at its most overtly gothic.
What makes the album particularly compelling is its sense of restraint. Rather than leaning into the increasingly elaborate production associated with some late-period gothic rock, The Wake maintain a stripped-down intensity that recalls the early independent singles of the genre's British pioneers. The darkness is built into the songs themselves, not simply applied as an aesthetic.
Masked became a cornerstone of the American gothic rock underground, helping establish The Wake's reputation well beyond their Ohio origins. Its influence can still be heard in contemporary bands working at the intersection of traditional goth, post-punk, and darkwave.
Three decades later, Masked remains an essential American goth record: melodic, atmospheric, and powered by the kind of bass-driven urgency that never goes out of style.
